Why Use Curtains and Blinds in Your Home

The sun will rise, whether we like it or not. And there’s a reason why the song Tale as Old as Time has this line: Certain as the sun/ rising in the East/. Case in point, we cannot be exposed to the sun for a long time. There are dangers even when we stay in the comforts of our own home if our windows are not covered with some curtains or blinds to make sure that we are protected from the heat of the sun.

Charrielou who owns a home in Singapore has several curtains and blinds for her numerous windows in different zones in her home, “I got this tip from my mother who was always the best homemaker that she is. I remember that, growing up, she would always call me whenever she needs to change the curtains on the living room and our own rooms. She spent quite a big amount from quality curtains because she believes it changes the overall look and move of any room. Our house’s East side especially should always be covered or else we will all be baked. Now that I have a family of my own, I make sure I do the same. I use curtains that are easy on the eye but thick enough to protect the family from the harmful rays of the sun.”

“I initially think of wood blinds in a den or library, but really, they’re at home in most rooms. Wood blinds are simply natural wood slats that are either painted or stained. They are a classic treatment, complementing many decorative styles and their simple construction makes them easy to operate. Many finishes are available ranging from light pine to bamboo to richly stained ebony. Different slat sizes are offered depending on the degree of control you’d like with regards to privacy and light control. For a stylish look, I like to layer wood blinds with drapery or topped with a valance,” wrote Katie in the article titled The Ultimate Guide to Window Treatment Ideas for blindsgalore.com.

Zsa Zsa from Singapore also loves her window blinds in her room, “I once saw this home magazine that advertised window blinds and at that instant, I wanted one, for both aesthetic and pragmatic reasons. I love too that I have something to clean because I am such a neat freak. Weird right? But not really because it gives me something to do and maintain. I know how much dust comes in, and I am protected from the UV rays. I figured, blinds will give my room some privacy as well.”

“Window insulation for winter and summer. For this situation, Curtains can actually provide greater insulation than a blind. By using a block out curtain or a curtain with a detachable block out lining, the room temperature can be stabilized thereby keeping the heat in or the cold out… Blocking out light and sound. There is little doubt that multiple layers of curtaining can block out light and sound up to 12 decibels. Blinds however, do not offer the same block out benefits of light and sound as curtaining and do not add the decorative finish, for example, to a dedicated media room or a formal living area,” an unnamed writer of the article 5 Advantages of Using Curtains rather Than Blinds posted at timmscurtainhouse.com.au.
